Since not living in New York it’s become pretty clear that I have tinnitus. This town is so quiet that you can hear a car a mile away but it’s made no difference for me; I still hear a whine in my ears at every moment of the day. Over the last six weeks I’ve noticed that a pulsing sensation has begun in my right ear. Naturally I just try to pretend it doesn’t exist.
I’ve resisted looking tinnitus up online because I already know that there isn’t a cure and so why should I bother learning about all of the other horrible things it could potentially be related to, right?
If only I’d stuck to my guns.
Pulsatile tinnitus - Rare type of tinnitus that sounds like a rhythmic pulsing in the ear, typically in time with one’s heartbeat. This kind of tinnitus can be caused by abnormal blood flow in arteries or veins close to the inner ear, brain tumors or irregularities in brain structure.
This is the title of a book I plan to write one day for neurotic, guilt-stricken young women in the midst of their first sexual experiences (I appropriated “Mazel Tov” for lack of a Roman Catholic equivalent)…
Katie Coyle’s blog is quite popular here at 551 (the farmhouse I live in). I often read them aloud in the morning after people wonder why I’m sitting alone giggling to myself. Then we all giggle together.
Related: when people search my name on the internet, one of the first things that comes up is the story of the hour for which I cannot account. That was a big hit here the first week.
